Split is by far the
largest Dalmatian city and the second-largest city of Croatia.The beginnings of
Split's history are conected with Diocletian's
Palce;one of the most imposing Romanian ruins in existence,the main
monument and definitely the first thing you should visit when you arrive in the
town. One of these structures is the monumental Peristyle, which is among the
most magnificent and unique historical courtyards in the world.Many of Split's
historical and cultural buildings can be found within the walls of Diocletian's
Palace. It is hang-out spot for the city's youth. Its character is a mixture of
living history as well as modern culture.In addition, numerous museums, the
National Theatre, and old churches and other archeological sites in the Split
region make it an important cultural attraction. An excellent example is;
Cathedral of St. Domnius is a complex of a church, formed
from an Imperial Roman mausoleum. with a bell tower; strictly the church is
dedicated to the Virgin Mary, and the bell tower to Saint Duje. Together they
form the Cathedral of St. Duje.
